Editing Fun

Can you believe it is August already? I swear it was Christmas yesterday! It seems we have already had our summer and all we see at the moment is rain, how depressing! But I have to admit gloomy days that I have off work I love sitting in front of my computer, putting the music on and getting to work on any editing I need to do.

Currently listening to one of my favourite albums...

I thought for this blog I would share a few examples of the editing I do for my lovely clients.

I have had people in the past say comments like 'Being a photographer is so easy, all you do is click a button'...It really is a little bit more than that!

It's my favourite part of the job when I get all my images on the screen and several gems stand out from the rest and I just want to tweak it here and there and the process can take a good hour just to get one photograph right, but when it comes together it doesn't half make me smile :) which is also why sometimes the photo shoots can only takes place around 30 minutes before I just have to start looking at them and editing ready for sneak previews! But this doesn't all happen by magic; apart from when using the magic wand tool!!

Here is a couple of images to show you the difference in a finish product, don't worry I wont use any Photoshop jargon!

Before                                After
(No black markings on the walls, floor cleaned up, brightness and angle changed)
Angela & Danny's wedding was held in Wallasey Town Hall which I really loved but I wanted their outdoor pictures to look that bit cleaner!

Before                                After
(Stretch marks smoothed out, background burned in and lines taken out, face highlighted)
I do believe in making a photograph still natural even with the tiny touches of airbrushing...as you can see with gorgeous Kerrie's bump I didn't want to disguise the marks completley because personally why would you want to! But each to their own, I know some would love to look like the next top model!

And finally here is a shoot I did for a family friend's Christmas calendar, how cool is Flynn? Now bare in mind this was put together quite quickly and more a bit of fun, but as you can see, the editing took a big part in the outcome!

Before                                                After

So without boring everyone with every detail you can see the effort that goes into removing walls/people, changing backgrounds, making the tones brighter and completely changing an image to something a bit quirky and despite it looking a little unprofessional round the edges this is definitely a picture that makes me laugh!

I think over the years you can see a big difference in my editing skills and I look back at my first couple of shoots and actually wish I could go back and chase up the customers to do them all over again! But everything comes with practice and even though I studied photography I probably go about everything the long way and still picking up on editing tricks that I should have known years ago!

Sometimes its more too much judgement coming from yourself over a picture rather than the client, as they seem so happy and unaware that you slaved away over getting rid of a speck of dust in the corner of an image just to make it neater!

I could go on and on about how much I love editing a picture in my own different way and think it is overlooked slightly, but theres a little insight of why it may take a few weeks for a whole load of photographs to be finished...Its quite rare that I show people the original product as I view it as showing my weakness calling myself a professional or my warped mind makes me think i'm not good enough in the first place but I need to remember that despite it looking like 'I just point and shoot' this is how you make something into a special memory and hope you all agree! Maybe get into it yourself on your Facebook profile picture (you know we all have done it at some point on the old Instagram ;))
